Bottom Fishing

  • How to Fish: Bottom fishing is the most effective way to target carp, as they spend a lot of time feeding along the bottom in areas with soft mud or sand. Use heavy sinkers to keep your bait near the bottom and wait for the carp to take the bait. This method is particularly effective in lakes, rivers, and ponds.

  • Gear Needed:

  • Rod: 9-12 feet medium-heavy to heavy-action rod for handling large carp and casting heavier baits.
Reel: Spinning or baitcasting reel with strong drag and enough line capacity to withstand large carp runs.
Line: 12-20 lb monofilament or braided line with a strong leader to withstand abrasions.
Bait: Boilies, corn, dough balls, sweet corn, worms, and live bait such as minnows or nightcrawlers.
    Tips:

  • Cast your bait into soft-bottomed areas, submerged structures, or near deep pools where carp tend to gather.
Allow your bait to rest on the bottom and remain still, as carp may take their time before striking.
Use a bottom rig like the method feeder or hair rig to ensure the bait stays near the fish and avoids being washed away by the current.
Be patient—carp can take a long time to bite, especially in deeper waters.
