TECHNIQUES

Casting/Spinning

  • How to Fish:Casting and spinning for muskie is one of the most effective techniques, requiring patience and persistence. Anglers typically use large lures and cover a lot of water to entice a strike from these elusive fish.

  • Gear Needed:

  • Casting Rods: Heavy to extra-heavy baitcasting rod (7'6"-9 feet) with fast action for handling large lures and strong fish.

  • Casting Reel: High-capacity baitcasting reel with a strong drag system and a gear ratio of at least 5.1:1.

  • Spinning Rods: Heavy-action spinning rod (7-9 feet) capable of casting large lures and handling powerful fish.

  • Spinning Reel: Spinning reel in the 4000-6000 size range with a smooth drag system.

  • Line: 50-100 lb braided line with a heavy fluorocarbon or steel leader to prevent bite-offs.

  • Lures & Bait: Large bucktails, glide baits, jerkbaits, and swimbaits. Soft plastics and spinnerbaits also work well in various conditions.

  • Tips:

  • Use a figure-eight technique at the boat to entice following muskie to strike.

  • Cover large areas by fan-casting around weed beds, rocky points, and submerged logs.

  • Use bright colors in murky water and natural patterns in clear water.

Topwater

  • How to Fish:Topwater fishing is an exhilarating way to catch muskie, with explosive strikes occurring right at the surface. Anglers should focus on early morning and late evening when muskies are most active.

  • Gear Needed:

  • Rod: Heavy-action rod (7'6"-9 feet) for casting large topwater lures.

  • Reel: High-capacity baitcasting reel with a smooth drag system.

  • Line: 65-100 lb braided line for maximum strength and durability.

  • Lures: Large prop baits, walk-the-dog style lures, and creeper-style surface lures.

  • Tips:

  • Retrieve lures at varying speeds to trigger aggressive strikes.

  • Fish along weed edges, points, and shallow flats.

  • Be patient—muskies often follow a lure before striking at the last second.

Live Bait

  • How to Fish:Live bait fishing is an effective method, particularly in colder months when muskies become less aggressive. Large suckers are the preferred live bait for targeting these fish.

  • Gear Needed:

  • Rod: Extra-heavy rod (8-10 feet) for managing large live baits.

  • Reel: Conventional or large baitcasting reel with a clicker function for monitoring bites.

  • Line: 80-100 lb monofilament or fluorocarbon line with a steel leader.

  • Bait: Large live suckers (12-18 inches) rigged with quick-strike rigs.

  • Tips:

  • Use a quick-strike rig to ensure a good hookset without harming the fish.

  • Fish near drop-offs, deep weed lines, and current breaks.

  • Monitor the bait closely, as muskies often play with it before fully committing.
